ANZAC Services around the World

ANZAC_1As dawn breaks on Friday, April 25th, thousands of Kiwis will be at Gallipoli to remember all of those who have served in the New Zealand and Australian militaries.

However, for those who can’t be at the scene this year, New Zealand and Australian organisations around the world are holding remembrance services so that Kiwi expats can pay their respects. We have collated a number of these international services and listed them below. If your country is not listed, be sure to have a look online.

SA National War Memorial, corner of North Terrace and Kintore Ave

6.15am 25 April 2014

There are a number of events scheduled across Adelaide on ANZAC Day. The main dawn service, hosted by RSA South Australia, begins at 6:15am at the SA National War Memorial. This will be followed by the annual march, beginning at the War Memorial and finishing at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pennington Gardens, where a Remembrance Service will be held. More

The Dawn Service at the Brisbane Shrine of Remembrance is set to begin at exactly 4.28am, the time that the first ANZAC set foot ashore at ANZAC Cove 99 years ago. For those unable to make it, it will be screened simultaneously in King George Square. Full details of the parade are still on their way, but it will begin at 10:00am. More

The day’s proceedings start even earlier than the 5:30am dawn service. Excerpts will be read out from letters and diaries of Australians who experienced war first hand from 4:30am. An ANZAC Day breakfast will also be held in ANZAC Hall, which you should register for if you want to attend. Finally, the Anzac Day National Ceremony will also be held in Canberra from 10:15am, which will include a wreath laying ceremony and the veteran’s parade. More


Shrine of Remembrance, St Kilda Road

6am 25 April 2014

ANZAC events at Melbourne begin with a 6am dawn service at the Shrine of Remembrance. The official website suggests guests arrive no later than 4:30am to be guaranteed space. After the service, thousands of veterans will proceed to march down St Kilda Road, starting at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets and finishing at the Shrine. During this time, wreaths will also be laid at the Shrine. There will be a Commemorative Service at 1pm, and the public is welcomed to participate in Ray of Light Ceremonies every half an hour after the completion of the service. More


State War Memorial, Kings Park and Botanic Garden, West Perth

6am 25 April 2014

Though the Dawn Service only begins at 6:00am, archival footage will be played on the big screens from 4:30am. Following this there will be the traditional parade and a memorial service in the Supreme Court Gardens. Fans of AFL should be aware of the annual ANZAC Day Derby game held at 4pm. More


Cenotaph, Martin Place

Sydney has a full slate of ANZAC events planned for the 25th. The day begins with a dawn service at Martin Place, open to all of the public. The consular wreath laying will occur in the same place at 8:30am, before the ANZAC day march brings the commemorations around the city. The main service will be at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park at 12:30. The public proceedings will finish with a 5pm sunset service, also by the Cenotaph. Rounding out the day’s programme is the annual NRL ANZAC Day Match at Sydney Football Stadium at 4:00pm. Details about the event are still being updated on the website. More

The Australian Department of Veteran Affairs is holding the official service in Malaysia. They advise that visitors be prepared for hot conditions and possible downpours. Registration is encouraged but is not essential. More

Manila, Philippines

The New Zealand and Australian Embassies will jointly host this ANZAC Day event in the Philippines. Members of the public are welcome to lay a wreath at the ceremony, and a ‘gunfire’ breakfast will follow the service. More

The New Zealand Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is organising a bus from Brussels at 4am in the morning, which will take passengers on an extended programme that will include a Dawn Ceremony at Passchendale and commemorative ceremonies in Messines, Ieper and Comines-Warneton. The New Zealand and Australian High Commissioners are holding three joint commemorative ceremonies in London. In addition to the Hyde Park Dawn Service, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph, Whitehall, and a Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey.
