Pixar co-founder Dr Alvy Ray Smith comes to Auckland and Wellington

Dr Smith is a computer graphics pioneer and media visionary. As well as co-founding Pixar (sold to Disney) and Altamira (sold to Microsoft), he was the first Director of Computer Graphics at Lucasfilm and an original member of the Computer Graphics Lab of the New York Institute of Technology. He was also the first Graphics Fellow at Microsoft and was at Xerox PARC during the birth of the personal computer.

Dr Smith has received two technical Academy Awards, he directed the Genesis demo sequence in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - the first use of computer graphics in a major motion picture – and has published multiple papers in theoretical computer science and computer graphics. He is the creator of many pieces of computer art, including Sunstone in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Dr Smith holds four patents and is currently writing a book, tentatively titled, A Biography of the Pixel.
