Have you got the right mix of drive, political nous and diplomacy to take on the role of Team Leader - Governance? It's a fascinating time in Auckland's history. Auckland Council is entering its third term with new political leaders, billions of dollars of projects already underway and some hefty new challenges to face. We need a sharp thinker, a strategic leader, a passionate Aucklander who can build relationships and inspire a team of people working with Auckland's political decision-makers.

Auckland Council's Democracy Services department plays an invaluable role in supporting Auckland's elected members - both councillors and mayor. You'll be joining the highly skilled Governance Support team.  The team acts as a key point of contact for the organisation of political meetings of the Governing Body as well as advising councillors and hearings.

The Opportunity

You'll head a six-strong team of dedicated professionals providing councillors with the advice, connections and support they need to lead Auckland. You'll work alongside other team leaders to build a great culture and drive high performance.

Engagement is at the forefront of boosting Democracy Service's team culture - you will build and foster relationships across the organisation to enhance visibility of your team's work.

  • Provide advice and guidance to Councillors on high-level issues in a focussed and meaningful manner
  • Mentor and enable a high performing Councillor Support team
  • Develop and implement continuous process improvement
  • Build and grow key relationships across the organisation - including Council-controlled organisations (CCOs)

Your Skills and Experience

We are seeking a passionate individual with previous experience as a people leader. Existing knowledge of Council practices and constraints would give you an edge. Your proven experience in Local or Central government will provide sound foundations to thrive in this role!

Your leadership skills and ability to manage complex relationships will enable you to lead and drive organisational change. Team work and collaboration is your second nature - you thrive in enabling your team of high performers whilst maintaining a focus on continuous improvement. Your strong leadership will take your team to great heights.

  • 8+ years' experience in a political environment
  • Proven leadership experience

This is a wide-ranging role in the council's Democracy Services department that offers a fantastic insight into how Auckland is governed.
