The Economic Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has a vacancy for a leadership role based in Wellington.  

MFAT ‘acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous’. This role is directed to the ‘prosperity’ aspect of the Ministry’s remit. This role sits within the ‘Trade and Economic Group’. It is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that thinks about NZ’s economic journey, our international connections and related policies directed at meeting the Government’s export ambitions.  

The Senior Economist/Head of Research and Analysis Unit is responsible for providing economic direction to the Ministry by way of managing a team of specialist economic staff and policy officers who support the achievement of the Ministry’s economic/trade/international connections objectives. This includes coordinating the ‘Building Export Markets’ work-stream of the Government’s Business Growth Agenda (BGA) and shaping the Ministry’s thinking on how government can best support business internationalise.   In this role, you will work with a broad range of external facing agencies, Ministers and international organisations to demonstrate MFAT leadership by engaging on policies to improve NZ’s international connections. You will also work with the Ministry to provide the intellectual underpinnings for the contributions that it makes to the policy dialogue in this space.  

This role is stimulating and challenging. It will prove rewarding to someone wishing to develop strong credentials around the role of international connections in NZ’s economic performance and wanting to further develop their management experience. The successful candidate will want to be able to demonstrate a strong economics background, a proven analytical and policy development track record, excellent relationship management skills and an ability to manage complex cross-agency processes. A good understanding of how international economic agencies work and their value to New Zealand will also be valuable. You will need to demonstrate that you have the ability to get the best out of a team.

You must be a New Zealand citizen and be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate New Zealand Government security clearance.
