Matatū Aotearoa, the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, is the professional body for all teachers.  An independent body, the Council acts in the interests of teachers to enable and support leadership and provide direction for the profession.  This includes teacher education, professional and leadership development, and sharing research and best practice. Alongside this, the Council monitors and maintains the requirements to manage conduct, competence and impairment, and establishes and maintains a code of professional responsibility.

Currently the Council is leading work, together with other professional bodies, to reinvent professional disciplinary processes so that they are mana preserving and fit for purpose, recognising the identity, language and culture of the professional. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Professional Services, this Manager will contribute directly to building public confidence in the Council’s management of conduct issues.   Responsible for leading a high performing team of lawyers, investigators and experienced teachers, this role also provides strategic direction and oversight for the conduct operations and various bodies involved in relevant decision-making. Furthermore, the role ensures that high quality legal advice is available to the leadership team and staff on matters relating to professional responsibility.

Preferred candidates for this role will be passionate about upholding the excellence of our teaching profession. With an ability to build strong, credible networks across the sector, you will be expert at maintaining strong relationships in demanding (and at times contentious) environments. A demonstrated background in balancing a commitment to regulatory rigor with a constructive, outcomes focus is also important for success in this role.

Experience working in education, the legal sector and/or comparable roles within a peak body (or similar) would also be useful for the appointee.
