  • Lead a Well Performing Team to the Next Level

The Gore District Council is located in the agricultural heartland of Southland close to Queenstown, Te Anau and the Catlins. As one of three territorial local authorities in Southland, it covers an area of 1,250km with a population of 12,400.  The Gore District provides a rural city lifestyle unrivalled by most, with exceptional community and recreational facilities. The Gore District’s location provides easy access to ski fields, the best of New Zealand’s national and forest parks and major urban centres. Gore is simply a wonderful place to live and captures the quintessential kiwi small town, with an established arts and cultural scene.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the General Manager Regulatory & Community Services is a diverse role leading around 30 staff, across the full spectrum of planning and regulatory issues, building control, parks & recreation and libraries.  As a member of the senior team, you will contribute to the strategic leadership of the Council, working closely with elected members and key stakeholders in the community.  This role has a broad span of control with plenty of variety and challenge. It represents an excellent opportunity for someone to step up and make their mark, taking well-performing teams to the next level, providing pragmatic and strong leadership.

Successful candidates could come from professional services, local government or a similarly complex operating environment and have demonstrated leadership experience with environmental and regulatory activities.  Working knowledge of relevant legislation and emerging issues in local government are essential, along with an open- minded and ‘enabling’ approach towards economic development opportunities.  We seek decisive, action-focused and well-established leaders who can point to a successful track record of external stakeholder engagement, particularly with iwi and neighbouring councils.

A unique job opportunity awaits in a well-led and forward focused District Council, offering all the lifestyle benefits of living and working in Southland.
