Ara Poutama Aotearoa, The Department of Corrections (Corrections), is one of New Zealand's largest government agencies. With a mandate to make New Zealand a safer place, the organisation works each week with 10,000 people in prisons, and 30,000 offenders in the community. With over 10,000 staff located across 151 sites, Corrections is committed to supporting offenders to address their offending and gain skills that can lead to a crime-free life. 

Currently, Corrections is in the process of implementing its five-year strategy, Hōkai Rangi, which will see a significant transformation to the way Corrections serves its community. To assist in this implementation, they are seeking a new General Manager of Human Resources (GMHR).

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive, Corporate Services, and in partnership with the Chief Executive and ELT, the GMHR will develop and lead the people and culture strategy across Corrections, ensuring that the support, development and enablement of its people are practically expressed as a key organisational priority. They will lead in an environment where all facets of HR operations will be reviewed through the lens of Hōkai Rangi. As such, the GMHR has the mandate to think differently and creatively about how to utilise HR in the service of Corrections' wider community.

Preferred candidates will have experience in strategic human resources and organisational development, with a background in leading large teams to implement values-led change. Stakeholder engagement is vital: the appointee will be a credible, passionate and empathetic leader, able to influence and partner with stakeholders from all walks of life. A background in public sector leadership is not a requirement for appointment.
