The Organisation

Gisborne District Council (GDC) is a Unitary Authority located in a growing outdoor-mad, thriving and diverse community. Government calls Gisborne part of a ‘Surge Region’ subsequent to the increased investment into forestry, port and roading. The region is dynamic, fresh, young, with great schools, and is connected by direct air routes to major cities.

As a Unitary Authority, GDC is in the unique position to fast-track your professional career by giving you both Regional and District Council experience, added leadership opportunities over complex growth and environmental issues, and rewarding professional development opportunities. All this alongside a supportive senior leadership team that truly lives the values. The Council is currently successfully wrestling with challenges around complex growth-related issues in forestry and water allocation, as well as housing and other development.  A great time to join and make a difference!

GDC is genuine about attracting professionals who believe in its values of Piritahi Tairawhiti.  The Council works in a ‘risk-based approach’ to planning and back-planning advice. You will be well suited to these roles if you have a strong values alignment, and are pragmatic and solutions-focused in work style.
