The region covers a land area of 723,610 hectares and extends 12 nautical miles offshore to include the waters of the territorial sea.  The Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) works with the Taranaki community to help make the region a fantastic place to live, play and do business. 

TRC is well known for being an effective and nimble Council that is innovative and leads the way with regional policy, planning and biodiversity strategy.  It is a great place to work, with a capable and experienced senior management team, a positive culture and strong family values.

As a member of the executive team, the Director – Operations provides operational and strategic thought leadership across Councils land, water, biodiversity and biosecurity functions and related work programmes. Supported by a team of 60, this role leads pest strategy, including Towards Predator Free Taranaki; implements regional biodiversity and land management programmes for soil, wetlands and riparian; is responsible for river control functions; as well as the three regional gardens. A focus on the delivery of projects and continuing to build on the strong relationships with external stakeholders, will be key to success.

Candidates of interest will have high EQ with proven strategic operational leadership experience, ideally from local or central government or related infrastructural organisations. You will have empathy with rural communities, a good working knowledge of legislation applicable to a regional council, with proven experience in project delivery and known for getting things done.  Attributes sought include excellent influencing and relationship skills, collaborative management style, commercial discipline and drive to achieve, sound judgement and intellect, plus an innovative mindset.  Technical qualifications may be in agriculture, science or engineering, with an underpinning deep knowledge of resource management.
