We are seeking a Counsellor (Science and Innovation) to join our International Science Partnerships Team, in the Science, Innovation & International Branch of MBIE. 

 

The Counsellor role will make an important contribution to the internationalisation of New Zealand science and innovation.  International science and innovation projects include implementing the International Science Strategic Action Plan and supporting the Multi-national Corporation R&D Attraction programme, New Zealand's space policy work and maximising opportunities for New Zealand's involvement in the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope.   

 

The role is based in the New Zealand representation in Brussels and will be a senior member of the diplomatic staff in the region.   The Counsellor will develop connections with governments, science & policy organisations, and businesses to advance the work programme.  This role will also support the bilateral science and innovation arrangements in-line with the Strategic Action Plan. 

 

As the ideal candidate you will have:

  • Experience in advising, networking and influencing senior political, government, business and/or research leaders and their organisations
  • In-depth knowledge of policy development and the machinery of government, and an understanding of the New Zealand Government's policy for science and innovation
  • Experience in working internationally, and an understanding of diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand science and innovation sector/systems.

  • Strong organisational skills – you will need to be good at multi-tasking and juggling a number of different priorities at any one time. 

 

You must be a able to achieve a security clearance (Confidential).  You and your dependents will need to be willing to relocate as soon as practicable and participate in pre-posting meetings and briefings. Overseas transfer and living allowances are provided for. The positions are full-time and will be offered for three years, with the possibility to extend by one year.

 

This is a demanding role and you will need to be willing to undertake a moderate to high amount of travel within the region during the term of the position, and have flexibility in your hours of work to accommodate working across multiple time zones.
