Established in 2002, Otago Innovation is responsible for developing and commercialising the University of Otago’s intellectual property. Offering a platform from which University of Otago researchers can ensure their research or invention is investor ready, Otago Innovation helps transfer new technology to the world. The University of Otago is one of New Zealand’s most research-intensive Universities, with its scholars contributing to leading international discoveries and knowledge.
Reporting to the Board of Otago Innovation, the Chief Executive will lead the commercialisation and IP teams in identifying and preparing technology to the point of being ‘investor ready’ and working in partnership with selected investors to support effective commercialisation.
Otago Innovation has an experienced team who work exclusively with University of Otago researchers across a diverse range of areas. Their combined efforts lead to quality research and commercial outcomes.
The quality of the relationship with the University researchers, business and investors, and sponsorship and research funding agencies is critical to success, as is an acute interest in entrepreneurship and technology development. Continuing to raise the profile of Otago Innovation within the business and investor communities will be a key focus, as will maintaining strong academic relationships and an extensive range of relevant networks.
The successful appointee will display the following:

- Proven ability to thrive in an uncertain and often ambiguous environment.
- Confidence in both academic and corporate environments.
- Proven ability to assess risk and attract investment funding.
