Otago is a prosperous and vibrant region which relies on its abundant natural and physical resources; particularly farming, horticulture, viticulture and tourism, for its economic well-being. Otago is the second largest region in New Zealand and includes Dunedin City, Central Otago, Clutha, Queenstown Lakes and part of the Waitaki districts. The Otago Regional Council (ORC) employs more than 150 people and exists to promote the sustainable development and enhancement of Otago's natural resources, preserving them for future generations.
The CEO in leading the senior team is responsible for implementing a wide range of projects across a number of activities. This requires building close and collaborative relationships with elected members and key stakeholders in the community and ensuring that the Council’s work plan is aligned with community goals and expectations. Accordingly, there is a strong focus on both delivery and communication.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record of success in a senior leadership role, likely but not necessarily from within a local/regional government or public sector role. Previous CEO experience is preferred but not essential, more important is the ability to deliver results in a complex environment with many stakeholders and priorities. Exceptional strategic thinking, and leadership skills will be essential to success, as is the ability to build and enhance relationships with a wide range of stakeholders across many interested groups.
