Once in a while a unique opportunity comes up that combines a precious product, a stunning leadership position and a lucrative global market. This is such an opportunity.
Tourism is New Zealand’s #1 export earner. It also helps anchor our country’s global brand, not just as a destination, but also for business, culture and sport. Tourism New Zealand is the Crown Entity responsible for marketing New Zealand to the world and driving the economic performance of this sector. After helping drive substantial growth in numbers and strength in organisation, Tourism New Zealand’s Chief Executive (CE) is heading to a new leadership challenge, opening a unique opportunity for a new CE to further grow our country’s tourism performance.
It’s a big job with a global mandate and a reputation for results. The CE leads a team of more than 160 staff in 14 global locations who are collectively tasked with growing the value of international visitors to Aotearoa.
While advanced marketing smarts and a solid understanding of the digital world are required, the CE is first and foremost a strategic leader responsible for helping deliver 17%+ of New Zealand’s exports. They must earn the confidence of the tourism sector that employs over 165,000 Kiwis and serves more than three million visitors annually.
This unique role demands a proven executive with demonstrable global and top tier leadership experience. Candidates must be digitally literate, deeply understand the changing marketing landscape and have a track record of investing resources wisely to deliver stellar results. Also critical is the ability to lead and inspire a global team to punch well above their weight in a highly competitive global market.
As a highly effective communicator, the CE will be adept at complex stakeholder management and must be capable of representing the organisation domestically and internationally in public and private sector settings. Because the stakeholders are diverse the candidate needs to have a track record of bringing together coalitions that deliver results.
A passion for New Zealand and empathy with our unique culture is non-negotiable and candidates must have high levels of integrity, good judgement and commercial maturity.
The CE must possess the right set of skills to conceive and oversee the delivery of innovative strategies that continue to ensure New Zealand performs competitively as a visitor destination. Ideally the candidate also has experience of working to a board and managing private/public partnerships.
Taken in its entirety, this is a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference to the economic wellbeing of our country and help define our national brand. Further information on Tourism New Zealand can be found at www.tourismnewzealand.com
