This autonomous Crown entity was established to manage the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZSF), a NZ$43 billion sovereign wealth fund investing globally. The purpose of the NZSF is to help smooth the cost of superannuation between today’s taxpayers and future generations.

While the NZSF’s assets are owned by the Crown, the Guardians operates on a commercial basis at double arm’s length from the Government.  

Board appointments are made by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Minister of Finance (the Minister).  The Minister must only recommend a person for appointment as a Board member who has been recommended by the Nominating Committee and, in the Minister’s opinion, has substantial experience, training, and expertise in the management of financial investments.

The Opportunity:

The Nominating Committee is seeking to identify applicants to nominate to the Minister for appointment as a Board member in 2020. In addition to deep governance and broad institutional investment management experience, applicants must bring:

> A demonstrable long-term fiduciary mindset in investing

> Significant business management experience in the asset management (including asset owner) sector or investment banking sector, preferably in the Chief Executive position.

The time commitment is approximately 150 hours per annum, excluding travel time, induction, conferences and ad hoc meetings or working groups. Meetings are held in New Zealand, mainly Auckland. The position is paid in accordance with the Cabinet fees framework.

This is a high-profile Board with a high level of Parliamentary and media scrutiny. S/he will have the gravitas and personal presence to represent the Guardians in New Zealand and internationally.
