The ups and many downs of one of New Zealand’s most beloved bands as seen through their eccentric bandleader and his personal struggles.
In the '80s, isolated Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island produced a lively postpunk scene that punched above its weight. The Chills defined the Dunedin sound; powered by introverted founder Martin Phillipps's brilliant songwriting, the local heroes became critical darlings and toured the world. But beset by tragedy, bad blood and constant personnel changes, they slid into obscurity as Phillipps sank into addiction. A sober, humbled Phillipps attempts once again to revive his career in this emotional documentary, facing a harrowing struggle with hepatitis – and sorting through his obsessively hoarded collectibles. Packed with bracing archive footage of the glory years, it's an invigorating, emotional tribute to a great band.
