Smart Seeds is an annual innovation programme for young professionals focused on generating fresh ideas to solve complex infrastructure challenges.
Multiple teams develop their solution over a ten-week period, culminating in our showcase event where teams pitch their ideas to a judging panel of senior industry leaders.
This year’s challenges are:
Sludge a Black Gold? – What are the sustainable options for beneficial reuse of biosolids and sludge in New Zealand?
How do we keep Auckland moving? – Auckland aspires to be the world’s most livable city. However, in 2015 an annual traffic report by TomTom ranked Auckland’s congestion as being worse than New York, USA.
Creative Disruption – Auckland is considered to be one of the most livable cities in the world; however, population growth is increasing demand on existing infrastructure and this has resulted in the need for a large number of construction projects in and around the city.
Upcycling the Hood – As Auckland grows – both upwards and outwards – it is going to face some tough challenges in providing the services that people need. Experience tells us that responding to this challenge using old thinking about infrastructure will only deliver more of what we already have
Is a zero waste target achievable? – What are the operational opportunities presented by the internal refurbishment to make significant progress on minimising waste?
