Road to Rugby World Cup 2019: A Special Evening with Eddie Jones (Head Coach, Japan National Team)
In 2019, Japan will host one of the largest sporting events in the world: the Rugby World Cup, for which 20 national teams compete every four years.
At this event, Eddie Jones, Head Coach of Japan National Team, will discuss his expectations and strategies for the Japanese team in next year’s World Cup as well as his vision for Japan as the first Asian nation to host the Rugby World Cup tournament in 2019. Eddie will also share stories taken from over three decades in rugby and perhaps let us in on some secrets behind Japan's recent performances.
Currently ranked 9th in the world, Japan has participated in all seven previous World Cups and most recently, the "Brave Blossoms" came within two minutes of stunning the New Zealand Maoris at the Challenge Cup on 8 November. With Japan’s ambition to strengthen their performance on the international stage, the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) welcomed Eddie Jones as the head coach of Japan National Team in 2012. Born in Tasmania in 1960 to an Australian father and a Japanese-American mother, Eddie played for New South Wales in the '80s and early '90s before taking up coaching.
After a brief 1996 stint as assistant coach of Japan's national team, from 1998 Eddie coached the ACT Brumbies in Canberra before becoming head coach of the Australian side in the 2003 World Cup. He went on to coach South Africa's Springboks and the Saracens in London before returning to Japan in 2009 as head coach of Suntory Sungoliath – which won two national championships under his tutelage.
When Eddie was appointed head coach of its national side, Japan was ranked 15th in the world. But since its spectacular triumph against Wales (ranked 6th in the world) Japan has been on a 10-game winning streak that has elevated the national side to #9 in the world.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Eddie speak and support the development of rugby in Japan. Spaces are limited so please register today to avoid disappointment! Special thanks goes to our sponsor R2 Supper Club for hosting the event with a delicious buffet and a great selection of wine and beer.
We look forward to seeing you there!
