The New Zealand Society (UK) (in association with our kind sponsors, Air New Zealand) is now seeking nominations for the UK New Zealander of the Year Award 2017.

The UK New Zealander of the Year Award is recognised as one of the most prestigious honours within the New Zealand community in the United Kingdom.  This annual award recognises and celebrates the person who has made the most outstanding personal contribution in the UK to promoting the interests of New Zealand or New Zealanders, whether in public life, by charitable work, or achievement in the arts, sport or academia.

The current New Zealander of the Year in 2016 is Mark Wilson, Group CEO of the UK’s largest insurance company – Aviva; global business leader and champion of sustainable business. He was educated at the University of Waikato, joined National Mutual in 1987 to become Chief Executive of AXA South East Asia in 2001, cheif executive of AXA Hong Kong in 2003 and Chief Executive of AIA in March 2009. He went on to become Chief Executive officer (CEO) pf Avivia 1 January 2013.

On 25 September 2015, Mark Wilson joined 193 world leaders to commit to the Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations New York. In a rare opportunity for the private sector CEO, Wilson addressed the UN General Assembly plenary session on behalf of the global business community, calling for business and governments to work together to achieve sustainable Development Goals.

Wilson was named in 2016 Debrett’s list of Britain’s 500 most influential people. He was included in this year’s list for his role in returning the British insurer to profit and finalising the £5.6bn acquisition of Friends Life. He is a married father of three and has been lauded for transforming Aviva, having overseen the firm move from £2.7 billion loss to a £1.4 billion profit.

He is very focused on ‘putting something back’ into the place he came from and works hard with the New Zealanders UK alumnae to maintain the relationship between NZ and UK.

Other previous winners include: Katherine Corich, Eric Tracey, Bronwen Horton, Kent Gardner, Terry Smith, Anna Hansen MBE, Esther Kerr Jessop QSM, Dr Ian Conrich, Jonathan Rennie, Tom & Susan Glynn, Peter Leslie, Dame Judith Mayhew Jones, The Rt. Hon Don McKinnon, (The late) Harry Mahon OBE, Michael Campbell CNZM, Sir Mark Todd and Peter Gordon ONZM.

The judging panel will select three (3) finalists for the Award, each of whom will be invited to attend the New Zealand Society Waitangi Day Charity Ball to be held in The Ballroom at the Jumeriah Carlton in London on Friday, 3rd February 2017.  The winner will be announced at the Dinner, and will have the right to be recognised as the UK New Zealander of the Year 2017.  This person will receive return flights for two (2) from the UK to New Zealand, courtesy of Air New Zealand.
