Following his acclaimed performances of Tempest:'Without a Body' and 'Birds With Skymirrors' during Edinburgh International Festival 2010, Lemi Ponifasio (MAU) returns with another stunning work, exploring the legacy of the First World War and the seismic impact the conflict had around the world.
I AM is a distinctive mix of extreme physicality and poetic movement, striking imagery and the dynamic interplay of light and darkness. It explores the power of art to transform and elevate us, to give us hope and a future – in counterbalance to the horror, pain and violence of war.
MAU tackles issues of politics, race, tradition and mythology through a combination of ideas and influences, performed by a community of dancers drawn from all walks of life.
Co-produced by Auckland Arts Festival, Festival d’Avignon, Ruhrtriennale-International Festival of the Arts and the Edinburgh International Festival.
Shows: 16 August and 17 August only
Part of the NZ at Edinburgh season supported by Creative New Zealand.
