Haka Day Out with Corey Baker Dance

Haka Day Out with Corey Baker Dance
Instantly recognisable as ‘the All Blacks pre-match ritual’, the Haka is a core creative expression the New Zealand Māori culture, admired by Rugby fans and viewers worldwide. From September 2015, Corey Baker Dance is providing cultural content to Rugby World Cup fan zones and festivals around the UK, to bring spectators the Haka Day Out, a performance challenging the perception of the Haka as an obscure or inaccessible dance for UK audiences. The free, 30 minute experience blends professional performance by trained Māori & Contemporary dancers with audience engagement and interaction, inviting viewers to become participants, getting up close and personal with the rich and fierce heritage of the Haka which combines artistic, warrior, and sporting culture. Through a shared cultural appreciation of sportsmanship and athleticism, the Rugby World Cup promotes a spirit of global community. Corey Baker Dance has worked closely with Maori advisor, Lewis Whaitiri, Chairman of Ngati Ranana, to produce Haka Day Out for the Rugby World Cup, as a celebration of New Zealand culture, the pursuit of artistic and sporting excellence, of cultural exchange and global connectivity. Haka Day Out is funded by Arts Council England and New Zealand Society and commissioned by DanceXchange and Birmingham Weekender. Haka Day Out originally commissioned by International Dance Festival Birmingham 2014.
