Elgar Introduction and Allegro Sculthorpe Sonata for Strings No 3 Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis EIF co-commission with New Zealand Festival, World Premiere: Relict Furies for mezzo soprano and double string orchestra Tippett Concerto for Double String Orchestra Composer Gareth Farr’s new commission Relict Furies for mezzo soprano and double string orchestra (a world premiere) is part of a vibrant celebration of the richness and diversity of music-making across the Commonwealth. Farr’s commission, with a new libretto by Paul Horan, features alongside Elgar’s noble yet virtuosic Introduction and Allegro; Vaughan Williams’s mystical Tallis Fantasia; the vivid nature evocations of Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s joyful Third Sonata for Strings and the jazzy rhythms of Michael Tippett’s thrilling Concerto for Double String Orchestra. Farr’s new composition will be performed by The Scottish Ensemble (14 of Scotland’s foremost string players in a tightly knit ensemble) and the Commonwealth Strings, in a concert that contrasts glorious English classics and rich Antipodean evocations.
