Double bill: Poet Alistair Paterson and technologist Anthony Burn
listair Paterson (ONZM) (above, right) has published nine books of poetry, articles on poetic theory and edited two anthologies. He has been the editor of Poetry NZ and winner of the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award (1993) and Auckland University’s John Cowie Reid Award for Longer Poems. His most recent books are Africa, //Kabbo, Mantis and the Porcupines’ Daughter (Puriri Press, 2008) and Summer on the Cote d’Azur (HeadworX Press, 2003). A former naval officer and educationalist, Alistair Paterson enjoys sailing, camping and family. He believes poetry is one of the world’s greatest art forms.
Anthony Burn (above, left) is the lead consultant for NASA and the International Space Station on Project Looking Glass, working with the United Nations and the World Bank to deploy next generation remote sensing technologies onto the ISS for humanitarian purposes. His talk will introduce the science, commerce and politics behind such technologies, and the recent agreement to deploy two new earth observation cameras onto the ISS that will be the most powerful ever used for civilian purposes. Anthony will discuss why the global community needs more such disruptive technologies, and the commercial and institutional obstacles that stand in the way. He will also discuss how such technology particularly benefits small island nations in the pacific combat the effects of climate change on increased coastal erosion, coral degradation, deforestation and water pollution.
Anthony is also a senior research fellow for the Centre for Climate and Security, a think-tank that provides analysis for international policy-makers considering the impact of climate change on human security. He is currently assessing the effectiveness of current space technologies for monitoring natural and humanitarian disasters – in line with the requirements of the United Nations SPIDER Program.
