Marlborough Wine Ltd (MWL) is a family winery which was started in 2007. MWL is now a top 30 NZ winery by volume.
Our contract winery is based at Spring Creek in Marlborough and our head winemaker is Chris Young, who has a winemaking degree from Roseworthy College in South Australia. We also have consultant winemakers in Central Otago and Auckland and a small and dedicated NZ sales and administration team.
Business, Brand and Winemaking Philosophy
One of the founding precepts of the business is an ‘inspired by nature philosophy’. As such, we chose the Toi Toi New Zealand’s largest flowering native grass, as the lead brand for our business. The distinctive plant is ubiquitous in the New Zealand landscape and quintessentially ‘New Zealand’. The brand is trademarked in all major wine markets.
MWL also owns, manufactures and distributes other brands, amongst them; Stone Bay, Marlborough Vines, Rata, HiddenTreasure, Marlborough Brook and Mouku. All reflect flora and fauna cues.
One of the other key tenets of the business is that we are export driven, with 85% of our wines exported. The largest market is Australia, where Toi Toi is a leading NZ wine brand. We have sold approximately six million bottles to date in Australia and have built significant brand equity in that market.
The other key precept of the business is our winemaking philosophy, which at its core, is ‘to over deliver on quality for the targeted price point’ and
‘To create distinctive wines of great quality by sourcing NZ premium varietal grapes from the regions in which they are most renown - Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris from Marlborough, Pinot Noir from Central Otago and Merlot from Gisborne’.
Innovation is at the core of the business. We were the first to produce Sparkling Sauvignon Banc and Sparkling Rose for our customers in Australia. We were also the leading ‘lower in alcohol’ brand in category for our Australian customer with Rata Sauvignon Blanc and recently, the first pink Sauvignon Blanc – Hidden Treasure.
We jointly own quality vineyards in Marlborough and Central Otago. We also have carefully selected vineyards and long-term relationships with contract grape growers to supply our remaining grape needs. Last vintage, MWL harvested 1860 tonne of grapes.
Toi Toi’s spiritual home is the Brookdale Vineyard, a 28-hectare vineyard in the Omaka Valley Marlborough. The vineyard has consistently produced Sauvignon Blanc (20ha) and Pinot Gris (5ha) grapes of exceptional quality. These have always made our Toi Toi Reserve blends. A single vineyard wine, Brookdale Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2013, rated five stars and best wine of tasting by NZ Wine Magazine. This vineyard has a unique microclimate that enhances and intensifies the fruit flavours in the grapes.
A second MWL vineyard is at Loddon Lane 20ha in the Upper Wairau valley Marlborough, in a spectacular location on the banks of the Wairau River. The vineyard is jointly owned by a group of investors, including the principals of MWL. The investment Company is, Investavine Ltd, the growth vehicle for acquisition of additional vineyards.
A proportion of our Central Otago Pinot Noir comes from our Clutha Vineyard, a 14ha vineyard below Mt Pisa, on the shores of Lake Dunstan. This vineyard has the much sort after Waenga soil profile and is in the recognised ‘premium’ grape-growing region of Central Otago. It is close planted with 3,800 Dijon Pinot Noir clones per hectare. Additional contract growers in Central Otago also supply Pinot Noir grapes, which are processed at the Spring Creek winery in Marlborough.
Bulk wine, as required, is also sourced from Marlborough, Waipara, Nelson and Gisborne.
MWL has received considerable national and international recognition for the quality of its wines, of which are regularly entered into various competitions.
Some highlights include the 2009 Riesling winning the trophy as the Best Riesling of show at the NZ International Wine Show. The 2010 and 2011 vintages won Gold Outstanding medals at the world’s largest wine show, The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London. The 2011 vintage was also awarded a Gold medal at the San Francisco Wine Show. The 2012 vintage also won a Gold medal at IWSC.
The 2010 Brookdale Reserve Pinot Gris was a Blue Gold Medal winner at the Sydney International Wine Show and a top 100 wine of show. The 2011 vintage won Gold at the Cool Climate Wine Show in Australia.
The Toi Toi Reserve Pinot Noir 2010 was awarded five stars by Michael Cooper, as was our 2012 Toi Toi Reserve Pinot Noir by Peter Saunders. The Toi Toi Clutha Pinot Noir 2012 won Double Gold at San Francisco Wine Show.
Cuisine Magazine recently awarded our Toi Toi Sauvignon Blanc 2014, five stars and ‘Best Buy’ in the Sauvignon Blanc tasting category of their Summer 2015 Edition. The judges comment …
“Admired for the virtuosity behind its winemaking and its long, harmonious finish, this wine won over the panel from the first round of tasting. Fragrant, herbal and citrusy, with a touch of sweetness, it flows with unhurried ease. Just right with a dish of steamed mussels”
Our Key Markets are Australia, New Zealand, USA, China and the greater Asian region.
