ANZ was the first foreign bank to seek and obtain representative status in Malaysia in 1971 as a unit of Grindlays Bank plc. As a Representative Office, ANZ Kuala Lumpur has no products to sell in its own right and is not permitted to undertake any commercial banking activity.
Instead, ANZ actively support and market the Group's capabilities outside Malaysia, with a view to identifying and introducing business opportunities to the ANZ network, and provide local support and advice to customers of other ANZ network points in Malaysia, in order to enhance the overall relationship.
In 2007, ANZ purchased a 19.1% interest in the AmBank Group, Malaysia’s fifth largest financial institution with total assets of US$21 billion and more than 4 million customers. The ANZ-AmBank partnership in Malaysia is well positioned to provide a full range of banking products and services to ANZ clients to meet working capital, trade, debt and equity capital markets requirements in Malaysia.
