Judges - 2008 World Class New Zealand Awards

Stephen Tindall (Chair) is Founder of The Warehouse Ltd and a Trustee of The Tindall Foundation. He co-founded Kea New Zealand in 2001. Stephen was Deloitte/Management Magazine 'Executive of the Year' 1998, and The New Zealand Herald 'Business Person of the Year' 1997. In 1995, he served on the Prime Minister's Enterprise Council under the Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley Governments and since 2000, he's worked with Helen Clark's Government on the Science and Innovation and Growth and Innovation Advisory Councils. He was awarded two Honorary Doctorates from Auckland University of Technology and Massey University in 2002. In July 2006, he was awarded the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award. In 2007, he was appointed a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Paul Callaghan completed a degree in Physics, then a DPhil at Oxford University. In 1974, he took up a lecturing position at Massey University where he began researching applications of magnetic resonance to the study of soft matter. He was made Professor of Physics in 1984 and in 2001 was appointed Alan MacDiarmid Professor of Physical Sciences at Victoria University. Paul also heads the multi-university MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. In 2001, he became the 36th Kiwi to be made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. He won the Ampere Prize in 2004, the Rutherford Medal in 2005, was made a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2006 and in 2007 won both the World Class New Zealand Award for Research, Science, Technology and Academia and the Sir Peter Blake Medal.

Mai Chen is a partner in Chen Palmer, Barristers and Solicitors, Australasia's first public law specialist firm, which she co-founded in 1994 with Sir Geoffrey Palmer. Chen Palmer was voted best NZ Public Law firm in the NZ Law Awards 2007 and runner-up in the Boutique Law Firm category. Mai was included in the 2007 Listener's Power List which selects the 50 most influential New Zealanders for the year. Formerly a senior lecturer at Victoria University Law School, Mai has also worked at the United Nations in Geneva. She sits on the NZ Securities Commission, the Board of the Royal NZ Ballet and is a member of the Asia NZ Foundation Society and NZTE's Beachheads Advisory Board. Mai is a fellow of the NZ Institute of Management and President of the Harvard Law School Alumni Association (NZ). She holds a first class LLB Honours Degree from the University of Otago Law School and a Master of Laws Degree from Harvard Law School.

Theresa Gattung was CEO of Telecom New Zealand, the country's largest listed company, for seven years. During this period, Theresa strategically navigated Telecom through world-changing technology developments to positions of market leadership, shifting the critical mass from telecoms to #1 in IT. She transformed the New Zealand business environment through application of internet and mobile communications, consistently grew revenues, earnings, market positions and maintained world class EBITDA industry margins. In 2006, Fortune magazine ranked Theresa #23 in their list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in International Business and Forbes ranked her #50 in the magazine's list of the Most Powerful Women in the world. Theresa holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (Hons) from the University of Waikato with majors in Economics and Marketing.

Peter Maire founded Navman NZ, the high profile New Zealand electronics company later sold to Brunswick Corporation (a US listed company). A foundation member of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology's NERF Advisory Panel, Peter is a sought after speaker, regular supporter of academic projects and mentor to many small technology companies. He is passionate about technology and believes New Zealand, with its culture of innovation, is uniquely positioned to develop vibrant global technology companies. In 2002, Navman won the Trade NZ Supreme Exporter of the Year award and the Westpac Hi-Tech Supreme Award for Excellence in the 'Deal of the Year' category.

Garry Muriwai has been Chief Executive of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants since 2003. He is passionate about New Zealand and New Zealand business. Garry was the driving force in the development of the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA), a grouping of nine "best in country" accounting organisations, with over 800,000 members around the world focused on helping professional accountants worldwide address global challenges. He was also appointed the inaugural Chair in 2006. Garry is the Chair of Maori Television and on the Boards of the Earthquake Commission and Advanced Business Education. He's also on a number of advisory groups. His iwi is Ngapuhi.
